The cervical trachea

The cervical trachea extends from the lower edge of the cricoid cartilage down to a plane passing from the top of the sternum to the superior edge of the second dorsal vertebra.

The cricoid cartilage is located immediately below the vocal cords followed by the other cartilaginous rings which reinforce the anterior and lateral aspects of the trachea.

The posterior aspect of the trachea, known as the pars membranosa, is devoid of cartilage.
